Description: Hi! I’m Barney! Or at least that’s what they tell me here. See, I lost my way a few weeks ago and some kind people found me. They tried to find my old home but I guess they didn't want me anymore. They didn't come looking for me. So these nice people brought me to Boykin Rescue. They told me they would find me a good home where I would be safe and taken care of the rest of my life. Boy, that sure sounds good. I was a bit of a mess with fleas and mats and such. But my new foster mom (I call her “Mama”) cleaned me up and got me looking good. She says my silky wavy mahogany-colored coat is the most beautiful she has ever seen and she’s seen a lot of Boykins. Mama took me to the vet and they poked and prodded me and gave me shots (ouch!!) but said I was healthy and good to go (I'm already neutered too!) and I didn’t have heartworms! Yeah!! Oh and they say I weigh 35 lbs. and think I’m about 4-5 years old. I don’t remember when I was born so I couldn’t say. I’ve got great teeth and a little silver on my chin but boy, howdy, I have plenty of energy and what Mama says is the typical Boykin wigglyness. Mama is trying to teach me some things. She keeps telling me “sit”. I think I know what it means but I’m not sure yet. I wish the other dogs here would play with me but they pretty much ignore me except for the one other boy Boykin. He thinks he’s boss and tells me so frequently. I just let him have his way. Here I get to stay out in a kennel all day next to the other dogs. Heehee, I did escape the first time Mama put me in. She didn’t know I knew how to unlatch the gate. She fixed it though and I can’t get out now. That’s okay, I don’t mind too much. I just don’t like to soil my kennel so I wait until Mama comes home and lets me out to do my business. At night I have to go into this plastic box. I wasn’t too crazy about the idea at first but now I know when Mama says “kennel” that I’m going to get my supper or something good to snack on. Plus it’s a good place to sleep. Mama has been good to me, playing and throwing things for me to fetch. I love to climb on her and give her great big kisses. See, I just love people and want to be where they are. Where the fun is, that’s where I want to be. I do like kids but Mama says I’d have to be careful around smaller children since I might jump up on them and mistakenly hurt them. I wouldn’t mean to, though. Oh, and there is this other small furry animal that lives here. I haven’t seen him much but when I do, he hisses and spits at me - eh, I just let him have his way too. He wouldn’t be too much fun to chase anyway. Mama fussed at me a couple of times. I think it’s because I found a spot where I wanted to tinkle in the house. I guess she didn’t want me to do that. Life here is pretty good but I sure would like to have a home of my own where my new owner-friend and I could spend quality time together and I could continue to learn all the good things that Mama is trying to teach me. Mama says for me to ask you all if you could give me that special home where we could be best pals and I could spend lots of time with you. Can you, huh?? She says send her an Adoption Application and we’ll talk about it. You can call her at 334-687-4950 (best time is the evening) or email her at bsr@boykinrescue.org . We’re in southeast Alabama and Mama’s real name is Amelia Skipper.
