Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary was founded by Karen Courtemanche and Annemarie Engelhardt, two volunteers (Karen had been a longtime fosterer) for House Rabbit Society.
Karen and Anne realized that they wanted to do more to help more animals, and in 2004, they decided to sell their homes in the Bay Area and buy property in the San Joaquin Valley. Harvest Home is now comprised of 2 1/2 acres of farmland in the Stockton/Tracy area and is inhabited by about five dozen rabbits, a donkey, a sheep, about three dozen chickens, two ducks, 9 cats, and four dogs. Phyllis Tenney, another longtime House Rabbit Society volunteer, now lives and works on the property and cares for the animals during the daytime, while Anne and Karen handle the night and evening work.
