On August 30, 2008, a starving, pitiful looking dog was brought to us, barely able to walk anymore. Every rib showed. His skin was covered with insect and flea bites. Not once did he offer to growl or bite. When we offered him a small amount of food and water, he looked surprised, ate it quickly, and looked for more. We had to wait to feed him again. Small amounts three times a day so he could get accustomed to eating again.

In the morning, he quietly watched us feed the animals, perhaps wondering if he would be fed too. So, after seeing the pitiful look in his eyes, we made sure we fed him first. Each day he improved. He seemed to love having a cozy bed to sleep in and people giving him so much attention. The groomer bathed him and he seemed to feel better afterwards.

We named him Chance, because he was getting a second chance with us.

Then after one week, he got a stomach virus. He stayed at the vet for 2 days, getting fluids and medication. We were all worried, afraid we would come in the next day and find we had lost him. But, he pulled through. He came back to the office with us and got better every day.

Chance learned that he would be fed every day, and be walked, and get attention from every person that walked by. This was a whole new life for him after months of being ignored and only occasionally being thrown food. After only a month here, he learned to make noises (not quite barking yet!) to get attention. He knows he is loved here and will never go hungry again.

In order for us to make this happen, we need your support. We live on donations of food, supplies and money. Our rent and utilities take a large amount of our donations. We have payroll, and supplies and food. Some months, we barely scrape by, or we get behind. We have fundraising projects going on all the time. We have wonderful volunteers that do so much for us. Could you please help us to continue to have a place for all the animals that need us so desperately? If we don’t have room, or the funds to take in another animal, we don’t always know what becomes of the animal. It is too sad to think about.

Please help us help Chance. He has become a wonderful, sweet, loving dog. He depends on us to take care of him. Can we depend on you to help us instead of wondering every day if enough money will come in to stay open? Let me tell Chance that yes, there are loving people out there that want us to keep doing what we are doing.

Please send a contribution to help us keep helping the animals!
And stop by to see all our wonderful animals!

Thank you for anything you can do for them!

The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) was founded in 1976 to help address the needs of an ever-growing animal population. Originally, all animals were cared for in the homes of dedicated volunteers. In 1999 we moved into a modern facility in Fort Mill, South Carolina, with the capacity to house approximately fifty cats and fifty dogs.

The HSYC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the humane treatment of animals.
Our mission is to prevent animal suffering, to help reduce overpopulation by promoting spaying and neutering, to educate the public about animal welfare, and to place adoptable animals in loving homes.

The ten-year goal of the HSYC is to have a larger facility, complete with indoor/outdoor runs, an enclosed play area, and other amenities.
