Not Enough GOOD Homes For Pit Bull Dogs
SPAY & NEUTER
SNKC CAN HELP! |
Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

| FOSTER HOMES NEEDED November 2008 |
|
URGENT ~ Harpo needs a foster home!!!
Harpo was rescued from a very difficult situation. He's in bad shape, has puncture wounds, suffers from malnutrition and tested "positive" to Heartworm disease.
Harpo needs a foster home ASAP so he can go through heartworms treatment and get back on his feet. Please open your home and heart to this sweet dog who has never known what it feels like to be loved and well cared for before.... |
|
 |
Each dog in boarding costs about $220.00 a month
As it is, we can't afford helping anymore dogs until our boarding dogs are in foster care. In the meantime, boarding is a life-saving option for a few lucky dogs but we cant do it unless we receive financial assistance from people like you. We have several programs available. Every penny counts!
Become a Helping Hand |
The dogs featured to the right are in boarding and in desperate need of foster care. Not only is boarding very expensive, but living in a cage is hard for any dog as sociable as a Pit Bull.
Boarding is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options, but boarding needs to be a temporary solution. PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts you see below. They desperately need YOU!

Missouri Pit Bull Rescue Has So Much to be Thankful for This Year ...
|
|
This November Missouri Pit Bull Rescue would like to focus on two things. One: all of the wonderful Pit Bulls and their owners out there who are making a difference in people's lives and restoring the breed's reputation. And two: the wonderful and caring people that sponsor our dogs without which we would not have been able to help nearly as many pit bulls as we have to date.
First off, it seems like any news that you hear about pit bulls in the media for the past several years is more than likely casting the breed in an unfavorable light. The hysteria that surrounds this breed is at an all time high and makes for great ratings for news stations around the country when they air negative (and many times "doctored") stories about pit bulls.
But what about the stories that you aren't hearing on the news? The stories that show the true character, devotion and loyalty of this lovable breed?

Popsicle, U.S. Customs' most decorated drug detection dog |
The stories about pit bulls as service dogs, search and rescue teams, drug sniffing assistants to the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the thousands of pit bulls that never do anything "exceptional" but do happen to test higher on the American Temperament Test than Golden Retrievers and Border Collies?
Sorry folks, those stories don't generate enough hype to make the ten o'clock news.
These stories that you don't hear however do mean a lot to Missouri Pit bull Rescue. This November while thinking about what we have to be thankful for, MPR would like to thank all the wonderful Pit Bulls out there making a difference and being ambassadors for the breed. |
From Popsicle, US Customs' most decorated drug detecting dog, to Cheyenne, Dakota and Tahoe, the three search and rescue Pit Bulls who helped the search efforts of the astronauts during the 2000 space shuttle disaster. Pit bulls have proven time and time again their capacity to make wonderful civil servants, therapy dogs and companions for the disabled.
MPR would also like to acknowledge all the other pit bulls out there who have never made the news. The pit bulls that have never done anything more than provide a wonderful companion for a lucky family or greeted their owner excitedly at the door with a wiggly butt and tons of bully kisses.
|

Search and Rescue Pit Bulls
|
Birthday Bullies |
To every pit bull out there that disproves their stereotype every day by doing nothing but being a huge dork and bringing a smile to someone's face, MPR is thankful for you.
For every great owner who raises a well-adjusted happy bully, loves them and cares for them unconditionally, and spays or neuters them to ensure a long, healthy life, MPR is thankful for you as well.
For every one responsible pit bull owner out there, we are one step closer to restoring our beloved breed to what they once were. |
Lastly, and most importantly, MPR would like to thank all of its sponsors. We are forever grateful for any tiny bit of assistance and support we receive. These wonderful group of people help provide MPR dogs with food, shelter, medical care as well as fun stuff like toys, treats and bones!
MPR would not be anywhere near as successful as we are without the constant support of our dedicated sponsors. The difference they have made in the lives of the dogs we have saved as well as in our lives is infinite and could never be measured on any scale. From the bottom of our hearts, everyone involved with Missouri Pit Bull Rescue would like to thank ALL of MPR's past, current and future sponsors.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Pet Cancer Awareness---- (Pet Cancer Awareness) -
There's nothing you wouldn't do for your dog or cat. That's why it's so important to learn all you can about canine and feline cancer. Because the more you know the better you'll be able to protect your pet. Think about this: dogs and cats get cancer at approximately the same rate as people do. But unfortunately 80% of pet parents know little or nothing about pet cancer.
ADOPT-A-SENIOR-PET MONTH---- (ASPCA) - Older dogs are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized at shelters. Saving an anima's life offers an unparalleled emotional return on your investment, and you'll feel the rewards every day you spend together. There's nothing like that twinkling in an older dog's eyes when he finally gets adopted and realizes that after a lifetime of searching, he's home. Save a Life, Be a Hero! |

| National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week 2008 is November 2-8!
(Ten Ways to Show Your Local Animal Shelter Some Love) - In 1996, The HSUS launched National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week (based on an idea from the Capital Humane Society in Lincoln, Nebraska). This campaign was designed to acknowledge and promote the invaluable role shelters play in their communities and to increase public awareness of animal welfare issues and shelter services. |
| How to let kids pet your dog - As we all know there can be some danger in having a child approach a strange dog and pet it. The Victor Valley Daily Press has a good story on ways to teach kids to pet appropriately as well as warning signs to be wary of. |
| Exhibit shows off pit bulls' softer side - Hathaway is such a defender of the breed that she has an exhibit of about 50 pit bull photos at Park Pet Supply in East Atlanta and is hoping to turn the project, which also collects the stories of each dog, into a book. "I wanted to start documenting the breed," Hathaway, of Atlanta, said. "And I wanted more than their photos, I wanted their stories. I wanted to know how people got their dogs."The stories, she said, have often been heartbreaking. Hathaway started photographing pit bulls in her neighborhood and at a kennel where she worked part time. After posting a few of the photos at Park Pet Supply and asking for more pittie photo subjects, she's been flooded with people who want their dog's story told."It's just taken off," Hathaway said. "I've been amazed at the response to the project." |
| HOUSTON, TX - Raid follows largest undercover dogfight sting in U.S. history - ... authorities expect to arrest 85 people in multiple counties on over 155 felony charges. They will also seize hundreds of dogs with help from the Houston Humane Society and the Houston SPCA. 11 News went along with law officers for the busts Friday morning [11/14/08] and was there when a DPS SWAT team swarmed a northeast Harris County property. The suspect's wakeup call came in the form of a noise flash diversion. And from the looks of Donald Wayne Woods, still clad in pajama bottoms, it was a wakeup call he wasn't expecting. Officers arrested Woods on felony dogfighting charges and seized 10 dogs and four puppies from the property. It was the first of many raids to take place. The investigation, called Operation Dead Game, was a joint effort between DPS, the USDA and the Harris County District Attorney's office. Raw video: Suspect arrested, dogs seized |

For visiting pooch, law is the pits - Somewhere in eastern Manitoba, Kerry Pakarinen and his best friend are headed for Toronto.
Unfortunately, the moment they cross into Ontario, one of them could face a death sentence.
That's because Preacher, whom Pakarinen identified to the Calgary Herald as a Bullmastiff, looks to many dog experts, like a pit bull cross. The duo are on a cross-country awareness walk for the homeless that will take them to Ontario, which bans pit bulls. (Nov. 12, 2008) |
| Ruby the pit bull goes for top dog honors - Ruby the pit bull has been chosen one of the top 100 hounds in the country and is now competing for top dog honors. Ruby and owner Pat Bettendorf of Scandia were recently notified that Ruby was chosen one of the top 100 finalists in the Milk-Bone 100th Anniversary contest. Online voting at http://www.Milk-Bone.com will be open through 11:59:59 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18. The winning dog will receive a grand prize of a $100,000 contract and serve as a spokesdog for Milk-Bone. Ruby is an adopted dog that is today a certified therapy dog that visits hospitals and nursing homes. She is pictured here with a special pal watching a parade on the Fourth of July. | Herculaneum, MO - Pit Bull Ban Proposed - The Herculaneum Board of Aldermen is working on an ordinance that would ban the ownership of pit bulls in the city limits. Council will discuss a ban on pit bulls on November 24 at 7:00 PM. Contact information for the Mayor and Board of Aldermen can be found at the city website. |
| Perryville, MO - Perryville, Missouri has a proposed ban on Pit Bulls, that was presented at their city council meeting on Tuesday, November 18th. According to the city agenda, item #3, was a Public Hearing to receive citizens’ input on proposed dangerous dog ordinance. Please write the Mayor and City Council Members with polite and respectful opposition to a ban. |
| ARKANSAS CITY, KANSAS - Ark City bans dog breed - As expected, city commissioners banned the Presa Canario dog breed in Arkansas City at its meeting Tuesday. ...There are eight dog breeds on a list the city was considering, and each of them is some variant of the Pit Bull, which the city has already banned. The other breeds are: American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog and the Presa Canario, known as the Canary Dog. |
| A MUST READ - Panic Policy Making: Canine Breed Bans in Canada and the United States - Although dogs have bitten humans for millennia, in recent years state, provincial, and local governments have responded to incidents of dog bites with legislation or administrative rules that ban the ownership of dog breeds such as American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, and American Pit Bulls. This paper examines if a framework of "panic policymaking" can explain the passage of breed bans. |
Sioux City, IA - Pitbull ban forces some local vets to stop licensing dogs - In September Sioux City Council Members passed an ordinance to ban new pitbulls from the city, and required current pitbull owners to register their dogs right away, but now there may be less places for owners to license their pets because some veterinarians don't want to get into the gray area of policing banned breeds. ...specifying breeds based on visual appearance is tricky especially when the dog is a mix of multiple breeds. Veterinarians say their job is to focus on the health of animals. |
| De Queen, Ark - De Queen puts ban on pit bulls within city limits - The City Council recently approved an ordinance banning pit bull dogs within the city limits of De Queen, Ark.
Ordinance 949 prohibits keeping pit bull breeds in the city. The ordinance was unanimously passed at the regular council meeting Nov. 4. |
| PILOT GROVE, MO - **BSL PASSED** (8 breeds) - According to the city clerk (213 College St.,
Pilot Grove, MO 65276,
(660) 834-3551), the following breeds are now considered "vicious breeds" in Pilot Grove, Missouri: *American Pit Bull Terrier, *American Staffordshire Terrier, *Bull Terrier, *Staffordshire Terrier, *Rottweiler, *Doberman Pinscher, *Chow Chow, *A Chinese fighting breed (Clerk could not pronounce the name of the breed). A violent dog ordinance is now in effect in Pilot Grove, Missouri after the council's unanimous approval at last Wednesday's [11/5/2008] meeting. Under the new ordinance, there are options for what could happen to an animal that bites or injures a person, including impoundment or humane euthanasia. The ordinance also reinforces the provisions for keeping a vicious dog in city limits. |
| Joplin, MO - Council nixes breed ban - There was no movement Monday night (10/27) by the Joplin City Council to ban any particular breeds of dogs to try to reduce aggressive-dog behavior and bites. Instead, council members informally agreed to look at making changes to the city's animal-ownership ordinances that would forbid tethering or chaining as a means of securing dogs, require mandatory neutering and spaying, and strictly cite owners for violations of the ordinances. |
Missouri - HB 1777 Neglect is Abuse, Too - HB 1777 will make it easier to prosecute animal abusers. Current law demands that "substantial harm" must be done to an animal before a perpetrator can be found guilty of animal neglect. This requirement makes it very difficult to prosecute starvation cases. However, HB 1777 provides that a custodian and/or owner of an animal is guilty of animal neglect if he or she negligently fails to provide adequate care or adequate control. Click HERE for more information. |
| Missouri - SB 819 Increases Penalties for Dog Fighting - Update, 3/06/08 - This bill was passed out of the Senate Judiciary committee on Monday, March 3, 2008. It has not yet been placed on the Senate calendar for a vote. SB 819 would give the Show Me State stiffer laws against dog fighting. The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Rupp, would add dog fighting to the list of offenses that are subject to the Criminal Activity Forfeiture Act. It would increase the penalty for being a spectator at a dog fighting event, and allow law enforcement officers making a lawful seizure to take possession of dogs and property used in the violation. This bill is pending in the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. Click HERE for more information. |
| Missouri - SB 886 Regulates the Dog, Not the Breed - Anti-BSL bill heard in Senate (Missouri). Sen. Jolie Justus, a Kansas City Democrat, presented a bill in committee that would prohibit cities from adopting breed-specific dangerous-dog ordinances. If approved, Justus' bill would void all previous ordinances and prohibit any new ones from discriminating by breed. Click HERE for more information. |

Due to this month being one of giving thanks, MPR wanted to do something a bit different for our Featured Volunteer of the Month by recognizing and being so very thankful for every one of our dedicated and hard-working volunteers.
MPR's volunteers dedicate
so much of themselves and their time through fostering, fundraising, event planning and hosting, application processing, screening, homechecking, web and server maintenance, providing breed education, transporting dogs, caring for MPR's boarded dogs on a daily basis, photography services, attending obedience classes and socializing MPR dogs, being available on an emergency basis to do whatever is needed and the list goes on and on ...
To all MPR Volunteers ... your caring, hard work and commitment are such an asset to MPR and the dogs that we wanted you to know we are so very fortunate and thankful to have each and every one of you on board. Thank you! You all are the absolutely the best!

|
| HAPPY ENDINGS |
Happy Updates are the fuel that keeps rescuers going..... |
Hello, I just wanted to let you know how happy we are to have Danica in our lives. A special thanks to Nicole for bringing her to us. She had a very short adjustment period and then settled right in to her home life, which consists of laying on the couch, playing, laying on the couch, going for walks, laying on the couch. I guess you get the message. After losing our beloved female pit in Sept to cancer, Danica has helped us fill the void in our lives. I have never seen such an affectionate loving girl.
Again, thank you so much for allowing us to adopt such an angel!
