ACAR has been operating as a No-Kill "Wall-less" Rescue for over 6 years.
Using only foster homes and unceasing hard work by our volunteers and board members, we rescue and place more animals than we did as a physical shelter, while the animals are cared for in homes instead of in cages. We are proud to have continued serving our area for 30 years. Despite our efforts, the homeless animal situation has only marginally improved - the only effective solution is spaying and neutering pets. We can't build enough no-kill shelters to house them all, any more than you can stop a leaky roof by putting out more pails. The sad fact is that there are more cats and dogs than there are loving homes. We urge you to support organizations like ACAR which actively spay and neuter companion animals.

Jonathan needs your help!
Earlier this spring Another Chance Animal Rescue mounted a serious campaign to spay and neuter all the adult cats, and place all the kittens in a household that though well intended, is completely overwhelmed with to many stray cats. Doing this we hoped would end the cycle of kittens that are born there every spring. Our efforts will pay dividends in the up coming seasons, but in the short run another mother cat showed up on the door step and produced another batch of kittens.
We rescued the kittens and spayed Mom but our intervention was not soon enough to avert a horrible injury to a tiny kitten we have named Jonathan.
Jonathan was accidentally injured breaking his little paw & leg. The family tried to render assistance but the injury was too severe and they called us. Jonathan is a sweet courageous little kitten with a lot of heart.
In two weeks, as soon as Jonathan gets his strength back, his paw & leg will have to be amputated as the damage to them is extensive.
ACAR rarely makes any appeal to the public for assistance on our veterinary costs, but this little guy is such a fighter & is in such great need that the organization has decided to go ahead with this necessary surgery.
If you would like to help with Jonathan's vet bill, donations may be sent either to:
Another Chance Animal Rescue

North Berwick, Maine 03906
Or you may direct a donation for Jonathan to:
Post Road Vet Clinic

746 Post Road
Wells, Maine 04090
Jonathan and his siblings will make wonderful loving companions to some area families in the near future and we are sure that Jonathan is grateful for any & all assistance that may come in to help defray his medical expenses.
Update: Little Jonathan has had his surgery. Sadly his leg had to be amputated at the hip. This 13-week-old kitten is doing as well as can be expected. This brave little guy stole the hearts of all at Post Road Veterinary. Please keep Jonathan in your prays as he starts his long road of recovery. Updates to follow.

We would like to thank all who have called, emailed and donated to help this little guy out. Jonathan plans on making a visit to ACAR's Adoption Center on Nov. 22 to meet and greet. Jonathan would like to let you see how well he is doing. He will not be available for adoption on his visit. We have many kittens including some of Jonathan's littermates that are hoping for homes of their own for the holidays.
Meet Nick Arau and Jonathan the lion hearted kitten...Jonathan's story has been aired the last couple of weeks as our really special needs kitten that lost his leg to a terrible injury. Nick an eighth grader at York Middle School in York, Maine read Jonathan's story in the Sentinel and decided to put together a medical fund-raiser to assist with Jonathan's vet bills. Nick made posters up explaining Jonathan's case and got mom, (Molly Arau) to hang the posters at her work place, collecting from many wonderful giving co-workers. Nick himself donated one quarter of the overall donation generated, by giving up his allowance that he had been saving for a special project that he had going long before he saw Jonathan's story.

Nick has taken the extraordinary extra step of going to his school principal and asking if there something that Nick's classmates could do to further assist with kitten Jonathan's medical needs. We are so pleased to report that York Middle School's principal will allow the student to donate 25% of their proceeds from the school dance in the name of Jonathan.

Jonathan and Another Chance Animal Rescue would like to express our most sincere gratitude to Nick Arau, mom, Molly Arau, and the many, many people that assist Nick is his selfless act of kindness to a very special little fur ball that can only express his love with instant purring. The world needs more loving caring young people like Nick Arau.

Jonathan is now ready for his own new family he would like everyone to know that by absolute necessity he will be looking for an indoor only home where he can be treated as a king. Jonathan has bonded very closely with one of his littermates (also a neutered male.) We would like to keep Jonathan & his brother together. We take this unusual step only because of the tight bond the pair has formed. If you think that you are the right family or person for Jonathan and his brother please stop by the adoption center on Saturday where Jonathan himself will be interviewing for his new family.

We still have a nice selection of loving sweet young kittens available as well as a large selection of young adults and teenagers. Adoption hours are 10:00 a.m. ~ 2:00 p.m. and by appointment during the week.

Kittens, kittens, kittens...
We have a large selection of tigers, black & whites and calicos that will be up for adoption starting this Saturday & for weeks to come as they become age appropriate for adoption. All kittens are vet checked, wormed, de-flead & up to date on age appropriate shots.
If you are looking to share your home with a new family member, please stop by the adoption center. Along with the kittens we have many older felines and teenager cats who will be meeting and greeting prospective new parents on Saturday 10AM-2PM.

***We are in very much need of Scoopable and Cedarific Cat Litter, Kitten/Cat Food-Canned and dry. Any & all donations are appreciated & are tax deductible. Thank you!***

Mindy is a declawed tortoise shell. (Declawed front paws only.) She is a mature spayed female who would like a somewhat quiet household. Mindy is very affectionate with her caregivers. Mindy would like a new forever home for the holidays. She blinked everytime her picture was taken, so this is the best we have for now. FMI please about Mindy please call her Foster Mom Beth at 439-7388 or email JBHallissey@aol.com Thank you!

Tuffy...
As I write this I am waiting for a call from Post Road Vets. I have just returned from a rescue with a battered feline that I trapped that desperately needs our help. Hopefully he is not to far gone and with much TLC, we can save him. We spend thousands of dollars every year saving cats & dogs very much in need of medical services. We thank our generous donors for their continued support, without which, the suffering would continue.
Tuffy has a huge head, a "sack of bones" of a body, blood filled ticks hanging off of him, ears full of mites, hair falling out in clumps and big sad half closed eyes.
Update: Sadly Tuffy had to be euthanized. He was in the last stages of Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).
It is a sad, harsh life that "Tuffy's" live. We hope that next time a stray pet in your neighborhood comes to visit that you will do the right thing for him/her. Contact your local Animal Control or Animal Rescue/Shelter. Please don't let their suffering continue.

Please have your pets Spay/Neutered!
Many kittens, puppies, rabbits, cats & dogs are put to death because there simply are not enough homes available. As a NO Kill organization, we find this unacceptable! The solution is so simple-spay or neuter your pet. Spaying and neutering will help make your dog or cat a healthier, happier pet. Low Cost Spay Neuter Certificates are available through The Friends of Animals, 1-800-321 PETS.
The Spay ME Program
To qualify for the program, pet owners must be eligible to participate in at least one of several government programs: food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability or Medicaid. Eligible applicants must also provide a $10 co-payment for cats and a $20 co-payment for dogs.
Starting this year, Mainers can check a box on income tax forms to contribute to the fund. For more information, call the "Help Fix ME" toll-free number: (800) 367-1317 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
